Since its foundation in 2001, the Kunstverein Worms (Art Association of Worms) has been an asset for the city’s cultural scene, organizing guided tours, workshops, art travels, and talks.
The Kunstverein Worms was re-founded in February 2001, following the tradition of the Association for the Promotion of Art that had been existing from the 1920s to the 1960s. The new association, having some 250 members, is an initiative of local citizens. It is run by a board, a committee of curators and an art historian, acting as artistic director. The association’s aim is to promote contemporary art and public appreciation for it. Works of artists from all over the country are presented in at least four exhibitions per year, attracting the attention of a supraregional public. Guided tours, talks and workshops are offered to enlarge on the subject of each exhibition. But the society also offers art travels and field excursions to broaden participants’ view for the arts scene in other cities.
In its exhibitions, the Kunstverein favours the promotion of young artists of our time showing a persuasive aesthetic concept. However, it occasionally also organizes historic exhibitions focusing on artists of classical modernism.
While the Museum of the City of Worms often hosts the society’s exhibitions in St Andrew’s church, public spaces and other interesting locations are used for display. Since late in 2008, the society has moved into its own premises in Renzstraße 9, just a few walking minutes from the main station.
