Nine Days and Nine Nights of Party

Every local’s all-year favourite is the Backfischfest, a funfair paying tribute to the fishermen’s guild, Germany’s oldest guild founded in 1106.

The name Backfischfest is a pun, denoting both ‘festival of fried fish in batter’ and ‘festival of teenage girls’.

Every year on the last Saturday in August, the Bojemääschter vun de Fischerwääd—as the ‘mayor of the fishermen’s lea’ is called in the vernacular—, and his wife seize the power in the City Hall, starting nine days of celebration of the largest wine and funfair on the Rhine.

After the opening on the Markplatz, the funfair on the fairground. The next day, a long procession follows with floats, marching bands, clubs and societies criss-crossing the inner city.

Spectators by the side of the streets cheer marchers with excited Ahoi! shouts.

Fishermen’s Joust and Fireworks

The last day of the Backfischfest has two highlights. The first of them is early on the second Sunday the traditional fishermen’s joust with contestants standing at the head of a fishermen’s boat with a lance and trying to send each other into the water.

The same night thousands of people stand by the banks of the rhine and on the bridge to watch the closing fireworks.

Funfair on the Rhine

Throughout the Backfischest, hundreds of thousands of people to the fairground to have fun with roller coasters, Ferris wheels, ghost trains, sidestalls, food booths, beer gardens, wine pavilions etc.

The large ‘Neuner’ and ‘Wonnegauer Winzerkeller’ party tents are favourite places to meet with all-night music, entertainment and a selection of more than 400 quality wines from the region. Of course, admission to the fairground is free.
